A Male Empowerment Playlist

At the end of February, Brittany wrote a wonderful blog post entitled A Female Empowerment Playlist. Female empowerment is a topic that is discussed on blogs, TV shows, social media, and schools. However, it is just as important for men and boys to feel the freedom to be who they want to be without feeling pressure to conform to a societal norm. So, even though I am not male, I did some research and found a list of songs that I think empower boys and men to be who they want to be. If you want to suggest a song that you find empowering, let us know in our comment section below!

Real Men by Joe Jackson (Alexander St. John Cover)

This song says “we wonder who the real men are”. This song gives tribute to the fact that “real men” can be anything that they want to be.

Son of Man by Phil Collins (Video by Tommynka)

This is a great video to watch with younger children and talk about what it means to grow up to be a man that you can be proud of.

R. Kelly's "The World’s Greatest" (An 11 year old boy from the Hamilton East Glee Club's Cover)

It does my heart good to see this 11 year old proclaim that he is the world’s greatest! I wish that all children could have the confidence to feel this!

Estelle - Conqueror

The chorus says it all:

I’d rather stand tall
Then live on my knees
’Cause I am a conqueror
And I won’t accept defeat
Try telling me no,
One thing about me
Is I am a conqueror
I am a conqueror

Even though this song is being sung by a woman, I like it because the video shows a male dancer, giving us a chance to celebrate the beauty that is the male body. Another great version of Conqueror is this duet by Estelle and Jussie Smollett.

Fight Test by the Flaming Lips (William Huster Cover)

This young man does a great job singing this song about knowing the right time to take a stand for something you believe in.

Just the Two of Us by Will Smith

This video has some great pictures of men being dads, some very famous. It also expresses how important and hard it is to be a great dad.

Working Man's PhD by Aaron Tippin

For the country music lovers, this song encourages men to be proud of the job that they do whether that job is at the shipyards or the factories.

Something to be Proud Of by Montgomery Gentry

This song is about the relationship between a father and son. A son listening to the stories his dad tells, the son finding his own way, and the father telling his son that he is proud of who he is and that he should be proud of himself.

Survivor - Eye of the Tiger (Bryan Magsayo Cover)

Bryan does a great job with the cover of this song. This song is about surviving no matter what happens to you. Sometimes it feels like everyone is against you, but you keep going and surviving.

You Gotta Be - Desiree(Video cover by two young men)

Warning: Playgirl cover shown in video

If you are a parent of a teenage boy, this video will probably remind you of the silly things your son does with his male friends. This video shows that boys can have fun, be silly, and let themselves create. The words to the song are also great!

Win by Brian McKnight (Marco Madrasto Cover)

Marco is dealing with some very serious health issues. This video is about his struggle and I take that this song helped him on tough days. The version by Brian himself is also very inspiring. We need to all remember:

I’ll never give up
Never give in
Never let a ray of doubt slip in
And if I fall
I’ll never fail
I’ll just get up and try again
Never lose hope
Never lose faith
There’s much too much at stake
Upon myself I must depend
I’m not looking for place or show
I’m gonna win
